I have a few guilty pleasures, one of which is The Bachelor/Bachelorette.
The Series channel is currently airing The Bachelorette season 5, which has already aired in the US. I know the outcome because my love of talk shows keeps me up to date with all the entertainment news happening over there in TV land.
Despite knowing how it all ends, I still decide to watch it because there are few things as entertaining as watching 25 good looking men vie for the attention of one beautiful woman (and vice versa for The Bachelor). I never thought straight men could be so bitchy. I love it. I mean, you expect bitchiness, gossip and drama from a large group of women, but not men.
The thing I’ve always found strange about this show is that the bachelors and bachelorettes are so good looking and seem like such genuinely nice people that they could get just about anyone in a real life setting. Why would they choose this route to find love?
After watching the show for years, they should know that there was only one success story. Trista and Ryan – the exception to the rule.
But knowing the show is flawed doesn’t stop me from being in front of my TV set on a Friday night and switching off after a long week.
In related (kind of) news, South Africa gets its own version of The Bachelor, called Rivals in Romance. It’s an M-Net production, which will air on M-Net series on DStv. I was told about it by my friend/colleague who works at Channel24.
I must say, it sounds like heaps of fun. Let’s hope the South African chicks can out-bitch the Americans when it comes to winning the hearts of the two bachelors in the show. Nothing would be worse than seeing nice people doing nice things all the time. Give us drama!
