I was also keen to see the first episode in which his guest was none other than Oprah Winfrey. I started watching that episode the night it aired and only managed to finish watching it last night. This is not to say Piers is a bad host and interviewer; on the contrary. It’s just that Oprah made for a tedious guest, which is why I could only manage a few minutes each day.
The conversational tone was lost because she was way too careful about what how she answered. I can understand that she didn’t want her words to be twisted at some later stage, but she’s Oprah Winfrey for crying out loud. If anyone can make a controversial statement and get away with it, it’s her.
I felt bad for Piers and almost considered deleting the rest of the episodes I’d recorded until I realised that the quality of your interview is 50% dependant on your guest so I gave it another shot. Howard Stern (self-proclaimed King of all Media) was his second guest. Oh what a difference a guest makes. Piers and Howard had good chemistry and great conversation and it felt more like I was witnessing a private conversation between two unfiltered people than watching a stiff and formal interview.
It was such an exciting banter that the hour was up too quickly and I felt myself wanting more. So, this morning I watched a bit of the Condoleeza Rice interview before I left for work. I didn’t have high hopes for the outcome of the interview considering she is a former politician (and they’re usually such a cagey bunch) but so far so good. She has some interesting things to say and seems more open that the Queen of Talk. I look forward to watching the rest later on.
Hopefully I can clear out some of the shows on my PVR before 2012.
Have you watched? What do you think?
