Review: Afternoon tea at the One & Only

One of my favourite places to have afternoon tea in Cape Town is at the One & Only hotel’s Vista Bar and Lounge. This past Sunday, my friend Nasreen and I went there as part of her birthday celebration. It was my third time and her first. We both enjoyed ourselves immensely.

The One & Only has the most superior selection out of all the places I’ve been to for afternoon tea. The reason for this is that they offer a savoury selection on their buffet as well. Most other places bring you a plate of mini sandwiches. Here the savoury tooth is considered as much as the sweet tooth. I have a preference for savoury delicacies as must most of the people who were having tea at the hotel this past Sunday because the savouries were constantly being topped up. I suppose one can also realistically eat more springrolls than slices of peacan tart.

Rolls, salmon wraps, aubergines. They filled up the tray just after I took this pic.

Not that their sweet selection is anything to scoff at. It’s a diabetic’s wet dream. From Lindt cookies to meringues to chocolate mousse – the variety is endless. And uber delicious. The sweet treats I had (I couldn’t possibly have one of each thing; there are just too many and I didn’t want to roll home) were beautifully presented and absolutely delectable.

Everything on the buffet is marked and the sweet buffet includes indications of whether anything contains gelatine (which isn’t always halaal) and alcohol (definitely never halaal). Thankfully only 3 items on the sweet buffet were not fit for our halaal consumption: marshmallow, mini churros, and fridge cheesecake.  All the savouries are halaal so we could taste it all.

On offer on the savoury buffet: Chicken pies; veg springrolls; mini veg quiches; tiny fish cakes; small salmon wraps; cocktail rolls with various fillings incluing egg and mayo and cheese and pastrami; aubergine rolls stuffed with a creamy chicken; crostini topped with a salsa; chicken live pate. There may have been more but I can’t recall.

Overall it’s a wonderfully relaxing experience, service is excellent and the food on offer is top notch. It currently costs R195 per person (quite a bit more than the R145 I paid the first time I went a few years ago but the quality now is better than the first time) so it’s a bit pricey, but if you find yourself with spare cash and want to treat yourself, you won’t regreat this experience.

A home-made afternoon tea bridal shower

It was near the end of October when my cousin Faatimah announced that she’d be getting married on 22 November. There wasn’t time for much breathing with a month between the announcement and the wedding date, but I couldn’t see her not having a bridal shower. I believe every bride should be celebrated before her wedding day and she was no exception especially because she’s so dear to me. (We ran a successful business together when we were aged 10 and 12, but I’ll tell you more about that some other time.)

I quickly conferred with her mom to settle on a date. We decided on 9 November, which really only left me with about a week and a half to plan and shop for the event. But I love a challenge and I love putting parties together so I enjoyed doing this.

The first thing I did was decide on a theme: Afternoon tea with the bride-to-be.

I put these posters up on the day. With thanks to my aunt for printing.

I put these posters up on the day. With thanks to my aunt for printing.

Next I made some invitations and sent them out electronically. In this digital age, a tangible invitation isn’t necessary. It also saves time when you don’t have to hand-deliver invitations to a bunch of people who live scattered around the city.

I blacked out some details but you can get the idea here.

I blacked out some details but you can get the idea here. In hindsight I should have gone with a purple background.

I also included some gift ideas. Since she’d be leaving for China soon, the gifts needed to be appropriate for this eventuality in her life.

And people gave her such lovely things.

And people gave her such lovely things.

After that, I went to get some decor items in China Town. You can get a lot there for a really good price. My aunt (the mother of the bride) also got the purple table cloths for the decor and the silver overlays, which was draped in front of the buffet table. I also added vases of fresh flowers to the tables. Flowers add a nice touch to any table.

A collage of what it looked like.

Then of course I had to put together an afternoon tea menu. Since it took place after lunch on a Sunday I didn’t want heavy things but also didn’t want an empty buffet.

For savoury: Crostini with various toppings; samoosas, springrolls; sausage rolls; pies; mini quiches; pizza puffs and a chicken platter. For sweets: Fruit; scones; cupcakes; lamingtons; milktart; carrot cake; mini puddings.

There was also a question of games. I decided to keep those to a minimum so that the rest of the afternoon could be dedicated to spending time with the bride-to-be before her big day.

All of this was kept as a surprise for her and boy was she surprised. She had no clue what she was walking into and burst into (happy, I’m sure) tears as soon as she realised what was going on.

As always, I’m thankful for those who help out and contribute to any event. This time the females in my family get a huge shout out for their help.

Review: Afternoon Tea at the Taj Hotel

There are few treats as enjoyable as Afternoon Tea on a Sunday. That’s just what my friends and I decided to spoil ourselves with this past weekend. We’ve been to a few places in Cape Town (Myatt Cafe, Vineyard Hotel, Table Bay Hotel, Cape Grace Hotel, The One and Only – ha! it’s mainly hotels) that offer this particular sweet indulgence, but this would be our first time at the Taj Hotel.

The sweet buffet at the Taj Hotel

The sweet buffet at the Taj Hotel

We were immediately blown away by the selection of sweets available. Of course, following a halaal diet means that we wouldn’t be able to eat treats containing alcohol and gelatine. When we raised this issue with the waitress, she called on the pastry chef, who came out herself to point out the two things on the expansive buffet that we couldn’t eat. Great service.

We were like kids in a very fancy, grown-up candy store and we didn’t quite know where to start. The apple crumble dessert took me to heaven, as did the baked yoghurt with raspberry sauce. It’s my mission now to try to replicate both these desserts in my kitchen.

The petit fours consisted of blocks of fudge, coconut ice and burfee (an Indian sweet meat) and they were melt-in-the-mouth yummy.

The only sweet I wasn’t impressed with was the fruit tart. I much prefer the filling of the one at Myatt Cafe.

Of course, afternoon tea is not complete without a savoury component to add some balance to all the sugary offerings. Our waitress told us that the savouries were freshly prepared when we sat down. Great, I thought. No dried out sandwiches here.

savouries

Savouries selection

The savoury offering was fairly standard – salmon, egg and cucumber sandwiches, mini pasties and mini quiches. The cucumbers were sliced slightly too thickly for my liking. I prefer them to be thinly shaved for afternoon tea sandwiches.

The pasties were served in a beautifully light, crisp pastry. I opted for the spinach (delicious) while my friends had the chicken (which they say was “vrek lekker” and “very nice”).

Is it value for money? It’s R195 so it is a bit expensive but it’s a treat we indulge in once or twice a year and the service and quality of the food made it worth it.

Overall, the service is friendly and welcoming, the cakes and desserts are out-of-this-world amazing and the savouries are so-so. Will we go back? Definitely.

Review: High Tea at At.mosphere Lounge, Burj Khalifa

Yes. You read that headline correctly. I had high tea at At.mosphere inside the world’s tallest building – the Burj Khalifa. In Dubai.

At.mosphere holds the Guinness World Record for highest restaurant in the world from the ground level. The high tea  – quite literally the highest high tea I’ve ever enjoyed – is served in the Lounge and offers views like no other.

On arrival you’re served the juiciest stuffed dates. They’re filled with pistachio nuts and macadamia nuts and is just perfection for a date lover. I was taking my first bite into a deliciously relaxing afternoon.

Welcome dates.

We sat down on comfortable couches and were served our high tea snacks on a beautiful cake stand. The top level of the three tiered stand contained the savoury elements. The middle layer had French pastries and the bottom level housed Arabic sweet treats.

The main event.

We were also served a traditional Arabic pudding called Umm Ali. It’s layers of pastry and what tasted like a rose creme patisserie and filled with nuts. It’s a delicious warm dessert that I aim to recreate at some point.

Umm Ali

There were also many drinks to choose from but since it was hot out, we all opted for iced coffee that was easily the most divine iced coffee I’d ever tasted.

Iced coffee

We were also given a beautiful stemmed glass filled with berries and cream topped with gold leaf. There were flavoured scones to choose from – plain, chocolate and date. I went with chocolate scones since I’ve made date and plain ones back home.

Berries and cream

I’m not quite sure how many calories were consumed that afternoon but it was worth every bite eaten. My only slight criticism would be that more savoury options should be added to the cake stand, but that is just coming from someone who prefers savoury to sweet.

If you ever find yourself in Dubai and want to do something extraordinarily fancy, book an afternoon tea at At.mosphere. Not only will you get a breathtaking view of Downtown Dubai, you’ll get to relax and dine in style as afternoon slowly makes its way to evening.

Full disclosure: I was there during Ramadaan and while I’m a practising Muslim it was “that time of the month” for me so I was exempt from fasting. One is also exempt from fasting while in a state of travel. I will of course make up (as is required) for it before next Ramadaan.

We tried Buzzfeed’s Strawberry Nutella French Toast Rollups. Here’s what we thought…

My cousister (that’s a cousin who’s more like a sister to me) Salaamah shared a video of Strawberry Nutella French Toast Rollups that she found on Buzzfeed Food’s Facebook page.

After Sunday lunch we decided to make it. I say we, but really it was just Salaamah doing all the work and me sitting there taking photos while it was all happening.

Nutella is the stuff of dreams and makes just about any dessert that much better when it’s added.

This the recipe by Buzzfeed Food. See pics after the video for how wonderful ours looked plus some reviews of the end result.

Aneeqah:

These are a perfect afternoon tea or breakfast treat. They strawberries weren’t sweet (since they’re starting to go out of season) so they provided the perfect balance for the sweetness of the Nutella filling. I’d definitely have them again, perhaps on an emptier stomach so I can have more than one. You won’t regret making these.

Uncle Maj:
Was very nice I enjoyed it and it doesn’t just taste nice but it looked stunning. Should have tried my Almond butter on one just to experiment

Aunty Samgah:
They were delicious and the icing sugar with the strawberries really complimented the dish; not too sweet but yummy. I will most definitely have it again.

Shuayb:
The sweetness of the Nutella and sour touch of the strawberries creates the perfect balance. A perfectly balance dessert. It’s not rich at all.

My mother, Koelsum:
It was very delicious. I liked it because the nutella was sweet but the strawberries weren’t and that brought it all together. I would definitely recommend it.

Making the rollups were the most time consuming part of this dish, but many hands make light work. I spread the Nutella, while Salaamah did the rolling and the filling.

Over the rainbow: My Joburg travel bucket list

*Partnered with Travelstart

I don’t get to Johannesburg often and I really want to see more of it because it’s a city with a great history and a lot to offer.

Local flights aren’t always affordable, but it the fastest and safest way to get to a place. So I’m really excited that Travelstart has some amazing deals that makes it easier for us Capetonians to go to Johannesburg. Find cheap flights to Johannesburg and get your holiday plans started.

I am hoping to get away for a couple of days in October. Once I’ve booked my ticket on Travelstart, I can start being excited about planning a proper holiday in the City of Gold.

With the help of my amazing Joburg friends, I’ve compiled a list of things I want do when I get there. This Capetonian needs a little bit of Jozi flavour in her life. After all, local is lekker.

My bucket list

Soweto

I’ve said before that one of the best ways to get to know is city is hopping on board the “red bus”. City Sightseeing Tours has a Johannesburg City Tour and Soweto Combo that sounds perfect. Stops include FNB Stadium, Orlando Towers, Vilakazi Street (which everyone tells me has become a tourist trap – but hey we are there to tour, aren’t we?), Kliptown Open Air Museum, and more.

One of those places you need to visit when in Johannesburg #soweto #mandelahouse #southafrica #wanderlust #journey #travel #safari #beautiful #instagram #instatravel #america #europe #explore #outdoors #safari #natureguide #privateguide #privatenatureguide #luxurytravel #followforfollow

Apartheid Museum

Yes, it’s a shameful part of our history. But I’m glad this museum exists. If only as a reminder of where we as a country must never go again. And while we know a lot about our history there is always room to learn more.

27 boxes

This gem of a place, situated in Melville, is a retail gallery built from shipping containers. How amazing is that? Their website says that everything at 27 Boxes “is done to enhance the lives of our community and to support our entrepreneurs”. I’m all for entrepreneurship and I love supporting small business (especially because I have a little business of my own) so this is definitely a must-visit for me.

Sky Dining

I love food and I love adventure. I’m also not that afraid of heights so ascending 60 meters above ground to a “restaurant” in the “sky” will be a trip for sure. It comes highly recommended by my friend who was there recently. There’s an option of breakfast, lunch, or dinner.  Don’t worry though. You’re strapped into a secure seat so there’s no chance of falling. What a magical way to dine and view part of the city.

There is another exciting lift happening on Saturday so email gm.higherground@gmail.com to make your booking and we’ll see you there

I’ve told you before of my love for afternoon/high tea and when I heard that there’s a beautiful high tea to be had at the Saxon Hotel, I just had to add it to my list of must-dos.

Food, food, food

Many of my friends in Joburg have recommended some delicious-sounding places that I want to try. I found this post about the best halal restaurants in Joburg by In Africa and Beyond really handy.

Considering there’s a halal Roco Mamas over there, it’s also on my list. Perhaps I need a more than a weekend up in Joburg, especially when it comes to trying out all the restaurants that have been recommended.

Review: Lunch at JIAH Restaurant

UPDATE: This restaurant has closed down

There’s something about trying out a new restaurant that excites me. When I enter I’m quietly rooting for them. Delicious food and good service make a dining experience delightful and makes me want to recommend the place to my family and friends. And all of this happened last weekend at newly-opened JIAH Restaurant.

My friends and I decided to have one last 2016 get together and chose JIAH as the place. Before we went we checked out the menu and were salivating in anticipation.

Apart from being confused about where the entrance is (the address takes you to the back of the restaurant so you have to walk up some steps to get to the front), I stepped in and was warmly welcomed by the staff. The decor is trendy and modern, yet welcoming at the same time.

I realised a couple of my friends had already arrived so it wasn’t hard to find our table. At first we thought it would be just us inside the restaurant as it was quite empty. The tables outside were occupied, but it was windy so we chose to stay indoors. As the afternoon wore on though, the place started filling up and from the atmosphere around us, people there seemed to be enjoying their experience as much as we were.

Eventually we were all there and had a tough time selecting a meal from the delicious sounding menu. I kept going back and forth but settled on a lamb burger. More about the food in a bit.

We ordered and carried on catching up – when we get going we don’t stop talking because it’s hard to get us to find a date that works for all of us – and before we knew it our mains had arrived. Lauren’s took slightly longer to get there but the waitress kept updating us on the food’s arrival and told Lauren she’d go down to the kitchen to wait for it.

The service was excellent (apart from the slight wait for Lauren’s main – but she addresses this in her review), the food was superb and the cost didn’t break the bank.

Here’s what we ordered (mains and desserts) and what we thought of our experience.

Ulpha: Noticing all the hype around their launch on Instagram, I was really eager to try them out. Having amazing friends who love to eat, I was very happy when we chose Jiah as the place to have end our 2016 meetups. Good decision. The entrance and address doesn’t match so it causes a bit of confusion when you first arrive but once you find the entrance, you are immediately greeted by such a lovely classy place.

The first part of the menu that caught my attention was their extensive mocktail menus. It’s nice to be offered a variety other than just a mojito or strawberry daiquiri. The drink that caught my attention was the Cosmo crush – a refreshing fresh lime shaken with curacao orange extracts and chilled cranberry juice. Served tall over crushed ice and garnished with a citrus twist. Sold! It tasted as amazing as it looked. I was rather disappointed that I didn’t order one more just before I left.

With my tummy rumbling, I was ready to order. My taste buds had a tough time deciding between the prawn chaat and the lamb burger with mint, coriander, chilli, tzatziki, fries and onion rings. In the end, the battle was won by the lamb burger with additional avo. Beautifully served on a wooden board – the 10 minute wait wasn’t even noticed.

When it was time for dessert, I was yet again faced with a conundrum. So many options – so little tummy space. Opting for the cannoli crepes was a good choice. Filled with cream and Lindt choc chips was a great way to end the meal off.

I really wish I could flaw them on food or service but I can’t. I can’t wait to go back and try more amazing off their amazing menu.

Lauren: So I’m always a little wary of trying a new restaurant. I’ve been to a few too many places recently that look good – really good decor, decent-looking menu – but then the food turns out to be average or below average. Jiah is different. The food was really good and I have no shame in admitting that I stuffed my face! I got the lamb korma with roti. My order came about 15-20 minutes after the others but I didn’t mind because the waitress let me know and I think because it was lamb pieces it had to cook for a bit longer to get properly soft. It was de.lic.ious. I didn’t even need to add salt or pepper.

Then for dessert I had the cheesecake. It was really tasty but I regret that the waitress didn’t let us know about the cheesecake on the stand by the bar. (Editor’s note: we really need to go back for that cheesecake.) It looked like a chocolate cheesecake.

Mmmm… If you’re looking for a good lunch/ dinner venue with good decor and service and divine food, Jiah is a good try.

Shaheema: I’m always keen to try new restaurants so was very intrigued to see a fully halaal restaurant with a menu as extensive and mouth-watering as Jiah open up just down the road from Bo Kaap.
The menu really is something to behold, covering all the bases – seafood, salads, pizza, pastas and burgers – as well as some really awesome steak options (I could eat meat all day so can’t wait to work my way through the Grills section) and a range of spicy dishes that were also calling to me. I plan on trying everything on the menu at least once. I am not kidding. I never kid about food. But this being my first time at Jiah, I went with one of their specials – the ribs with 2 sides (their sides menu includes mac and cheese, creamed butternut/spinach, fries, tempura onion rings, roasted veg – and lots more. Trust me, this menu is *deep*).
As I said, I love meat, but don’t get to enjoy ribs very often so had high expectations. The ribs were yummy, well grilled in a nice basting sauce but would have preferred way, way more of the basting as a coating to keep the ribs moist. I like my ribs to be almost dripping in the basting, running down my arms as I chow down with my hands. But as it was the ribs were dry. The mac and cheese and fries sides were ok, but tiny portions (esp at R25 a pop!)

For dessert I opted for the Banana Split, which was very more-ish – I would have licked my bowl clean had I not already treated my friends and other guests to the sight of me eating ribs with my hands – though would have preferred if they’d gone the extra step to caramelise the bananas and not serve them ‘fresh out of the peel’ as it were.
The entrance of Jiah is stylish and inviting and the venue is perfect for lively get-togethers and big groups – though wouldn’t recommend for intimate date nights as it can get a bit rowdy in there with kids and low ceilings and closely packed tables and every sound wave just bouncing its way back into your eardrums. Though the outside dining area seemed more chilled.
Service was good and attentive service and would recommend to Jiah (and every restaurant out there) to ensure that their wait staff know the menu and food inside out and can make informed recommendations to guests. It makes all the difference.

Me: I opted for the lamb burger and asked for additional feta to be added. The burger comes with mint, coriander, chilli and tzatziki and tomato so I thought the addition of extra feta would complement the Mediterranean flavours. It is served in a wooden board, and served with onion rings and the fries come in a wire basket. The lamb was juicy and tender and delicious. I’m salivating just thinking about it.

For dessert I opted for a crème brulee. I was absolutely blown away by the presentation on its arrival. It’s served with the pretties of sugar baskets. The custard was impeccably creamy and set and the burnt sugar at the top had the perfect crack to it. It’s not often that restaurants get crème brulee right but JIAH certainly delivered. It also came with a biscotti and I’m now realising I should have had some coffee with it. Next time…

Overall the bill for the four of us came to about R800 so it was an average of R200 per person for mains, desserts and virgin cocktails.

We’ll all keen to return to try more items on the menu.

Have you tried JIAH? What did you think? Tell me in the comments below.

This and that

Farewell, 2015. You’ve been amazing.

Over the past few weeks I’ve seen many people posting about how 2015 had got the better of them, how it defeated them. I feel bad for these people.

I’ve had years like that, where you feel like everything that can go wrong does, but I can say that 2015 was not like that. It’s been good to me and I’m always extremely grateful for all the good in my life, not only in 2015. I take the bad things as a lesson and try to learn something from it.

Yes, this year has had some downs. What year doesn’t? But as I sit here, six or so hours before midnight and write this, I can say I’ve left those two or three awful about this year in the 2015 recycle bin where they belong. Sure, at the time it caused me major distress, but right now all I can think about are the wonderful memories I made this year.

Family fun times

It all started with spending time with my family from Down Under. While they were here we all played tourist together and did some of the most fun things I’ve ever done.

We went on a helicopter ride and saw an Cape Town like we’ve never seen it before. We went zip lining. I still can’t believe a bang broek like me managed that. And you know what? I’d do it again in a heartbeat.

I’m so thankful I got to spend so much time with so many of my family members this year. Sometimes we spend too much time being busy that we put off making time for all the people who matter. Let’s hope we can keep up with family time in 2016.

Feasting with friends

I have made some of the most amazing friends in my 30 years on this planet. I’d not trade them for anything. It’s often a struggle to align schedules, what with everyone being so busy, but when I manage to spend time with my friends (we usually eat lots when we spend time together), we always have the best time. It’s the greatest thing when you have people you can talk to about anything and everything. People that have no blood ties to you but that you choose to spend time with anyway. Some of you have been in my life a short time, some for 10 or 20 or more years. Thank you all for being part of my life. Here’s to more memories with all of you in 2016.

Our desserts. Nadira chose carrot cake. Zahiera had cheesecake. I went with creme brulee. #afternoontea #friends #myatt #dessert #waterfront A photo posted by Aneeqah (@aneeqahe) on Feb 1, 2015 at 7:13am PST

Busy businessing

This year when people asked me how I’ve been, my immediate response is “good but busy”. Boy, it’s been a helluva busy year. I decided to expand my little side food venture into frozen goods (specifically savouries) and launched this before Ramadan. I didn’t anticipate the number of orders I’d get or the hard work it would be getting it all done before the fast started, but I’m extremely grateful for the support of all my clients. Thanks to everyone who ordered and continue to order food things from me. You may not know it, but you’re helping me realise a dream I’ve had since forever.

At least I’m done with my orders before Magrib this evening.   A photo posted by Aneeqah (@aneeqahe) on Nov 18, 2015 at 9:14am PST

Another thing I’ve done is redesign this blog. It was a long time coming and something I’d been wanting to do for months. The new look launched in November. I’m so thankful to all my old and new readers. Keep coming back, you guys. This wouldn’t be worth the effort without your loyal readership. THANK YOU!

Fabulous foodie fun

Thanks to the ladies at Food24 for sending me to cooking class hosted by Chef Harpreet at the Taj Hotel. It was my first time stepping into a professional kitchen and it was a dream come true.

I’m a huge fan of Masterchef Australia and this year I was lucky enough to get to see Matt Preston in action. Not only that, I got to meet the guy after and take a pic with him. I’m still pinching myself about this! Is it even real? YES IT IS!

Travelling

I didn’t start this year with any specific travel plans in mind, but then a Dubai trip came up and work and I grabbed it with both hands. Thanks to Selene Brophy, the editor of Traveller24.com, for selecting me for this media tour. Dubai was one of the best things about 2015. I definitely want to go back and explore that spectacular city some more.

As you may have read yesterday, I went to Indonesia a couple of months ago. This was another journey that came up unexpectedly, which left me with the fondest of memories.

We literally step out of the villa and we’re on the black sands of Lovina. So beautiful and relaxing after a busy week. #Baliliving A photo posted by Aneeqah (@aneeqahe) on Oct 5, 2015 at 9:09pm PDT

These adventures infected me with a travel bug so severe, that I’ve already made plans for some time away in 2016. I just want to see the world.

I’m going to leave it here.

I want to wish you all a safe and happy 2016. Thank you for reading From My Fingertips. I look forward to bringing you more travel tales, restaurant reviews, recipes and random ramblings.

Eid-ul-Fitr 2015: A day to celebrate

A belated Eid Mubarak to my fellow Muslim readers. I hope your day was filled with quality family time and included lots of love and laughter.

I realise I didn’t post about the last few days of Ramadaan but things got busy with Eid preparations and I was feeling a bit under the weather so forgive me. The meals eaten at the last few iftars were not the most exciting (except for one iftar we hosted after I got back from Dubai) as we were busy preparing the house for Eid.

We’d just have a mezze plate or a fattoush salad.

But when we host an iftar, we go all out.

This was a snoek pie I made with leftover fried snoek.

Eid prep began the afternoon before Eid. I baked fruit cake. My mom baked hertzoggies and date loaf

Moving onto Eid. It’s always a bittersweet time the night before Eid comes around. Happiness is felt because we’ll see our families, eat well and be merry. Sadness that the beautiful month of Ramadaan has ended. When I hear the takbeer on the radio, my eyes well up with tears in mourning for the month that has passed.

And then Eid morning rolls around and the joyous spirit is felt and we can only but look forward to the following Ramadaan.

Eid this year was great. It starts with seeing and spending time with family, friends and neighbours and ends in much the same way.

There is plenty of food going around at every house you visit and even at your own house, but your stomach can’t really cope with eating all day so you really look forward to the leftovers the next day and the day after that.

My mom and I had lunch at my aunt and uncle’s place and it was a delicious time. Good food, great company, lots of laughter.

On the menu: Grilled salmon fillet, savoury rice and creamy spinach sauce; Roast leg of lamb and veg; cray fish curry and rice; butter chicken and roti (not in pic below); salad.

Shortly after lunch we visited mom’s cousin and from then time flew so quickly that it was time to go home and prepare for my mom’s siblings and my cousins and their kids who all come to our house for a visit in the evenings.

Some snaps of the table at our place.

I hope all of you who celebrated had a wonderful time.
